ZIMBABWE has pledged its full support for a Southern African Development Community (Sadc) roadmap designed to restore constitutional governance, peace and stability in Madagascar.

This follows an extraordinary summit of Sadc Heads of State and Government held virtually on Wednesday.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa was represented at the summit by the Foreign Affairs and International Trade minister Amon Murwira, who participated from State House.

The summit focused on the political and security situation in Madagascar, which recently relinquished its chairmanship of the regional bloc.

Leaders deliberated on measures to guide the country back to constitutional order in line with Sadc’s fundamental principles.

Murwira said Zimbabwe fully backed the summit’s resolutions, underscoring the region’s collective resolve.

“The extraordinary summit clearly demonstrated Sadc’s unity of purpose in safeguarding peace, security and constitutionalism,” he said.

“Our primary objective is to support the people of Madagascar for a peaceful, orderly and inclusive return to full democratic rule.”

The summit formally adopted a report from a Sadc fact-finding mission, which outlines a detailed roadmap.

This plan aims to restore constitutional order, consolidate stability and promote sustainable development within Madagascar, aligning with broader regional integration goals.

Murwira described the roadmap as a critical step, emphasising Sadc’s dedication to Africa-led solutions.

“This roadmap provides a clear direction and reflects Sadc’s commitment to facilitating African solutions to African challenges,” he noted.

“The region will play a supportive role during the transitional period, working closely with Malagasy authorities and the people to ensure a successful return to normalcy.

“This is a demonstration of practical solidarity. The region has committed resources to effectively implement the agreed processes.”

The summit elected Zambia the interim chair of the Sadc Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation, a role it will lay until August.
