VICTORIA FALLS town is set to host the country’s debut Wines of South Africa Grand Tasting fiesta on October 27 as a way of promoting and marketing wine tourism in the region and abroad.

Event coordinator Kuda Hove told NewsDay Life & Style that the event was meant to provide a platform for wine estates to engage directly with the hospitality and distribution industry while promoting tourism through wine.

“It is anticipated to an informative event with training and tasting for wine enthusiasts and traders from border towns of Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe,” Hove said.

The event comes in the backdrop of the recent United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)’s Wine Tourism Conference in Chisinau in Moldova, which was held from September 6 to 7.

UNWTO secretary-general Zurab Pololikashvili told the conference there was need to spread their wings and make the industry more inclusive.

“The complexity of wine tourism development and the diversity of stakeholders involved requires innovative models of collaboration; we need to break down walls and promote new clusters, which is echoed by the participation of neighbouring countries in the event to bring like minds together to promote wine tourism,” he said.

WOSA, which represents all South African wine producers, was established in its current form in 1999 and has over 500 members and has a mandate to promote the exportation of South African wines.
