Zimbabwe’s Jah Seed (real name Adrian Mupemi) raised the country’s flag high over the weekend as he scooped an award at the annual MTN South African Music Awards (Sama’s).
Jah Seed is popularly known from the group Bongo Muffin which hit the charts some years ago with tracks Thath’ isgubhu and Kura Uone.
The group’s lead singer Thandiswa Mazwai who has gone solo also scooped the Female Artist of the Year award for The Forgotten Free (live in concert) album.
Mupemi who was born and raised in Zimbabwe was known as Apple Seed before rebranding his name to Jah Seed because of his hairstyle.
He scooped the Best Reggae Album award for his No Retreat No Surrender album at an awards ceremony held at Monte Casino in Johannesburg, South Africa, over the weekend.
The album features the Clueless hit track which is still a club anthem.

This year, the awards were split over two nights, Friday and Saturday and broadcast live on SABC 1.
The big winner of the night was Professor of the Jezebel and Imoto fame and his popular album, University of Kalawa Jazmee saw the musician scooping various awards at this year’s Sama’s including MTN Record of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, and Best Kwaito album.
As usual, there were shocks and surprises at the awards ceremony which was hosted by Bonang Matheba and Phat Joe.
A controversial win was that of Liquideep who won the coveted Album of the Year award for the album Fabrics of the Heart which was basically repackaged from a previous album.
The dance duo also won Duo/Group of the Year. The Parlatones, Stimela and Freshly Ground also scooped numerous awards.
The Best-selling True-tone went to DJ Mzi and DJ Cleo and the Best Mbaqanga album was scooped by the Soul Brothers.
The Best Urban Dance Album award went to DJ Kent for his I Can’t Survive album.
