AWARD-WINNING entrepreneur and creative strategist Kathy Mwanza is proving that in business, just like in baking, the right mix of creativity, discipline and a dash of innovation can produce impressive results.
As guest of honour at the fourth Sunroma Buttercup Bakers Conference held in Harare on May 1, Mwanza delivered a keynote that inspired both seasoned professionals and newcomers eager to rise in Zimbabwe’s growing baking sector.
Founder of Cake Fairy and Cake Designs Zim, established in 2016, Mwanza has built a brand known for combining artistic flair with strong operational systems. She is also associated with Fairy Café, reflecting her broader vision of creating memorable customer experiences around food and hospitality.
A graduate of the National University of Science and Technology, where she earned both a BCom Honours degree and an MSc in Marketing, Mwanza blends academic insight with practical creativity to grow her business ventures.
The Sunroma Buttercup Bakers Conference attracted more than 260 participants, including industry stakeholders and entrepreneurs. Held under the theme, Bake It Legit: Building a Thriving Brand, the event highlighted how baking is steadily evolving from a home-based pastime into a structured and profitable industry.
Speaking in an interview, Mwanza said her baking journey began quite naturally.

“It started organically. Baking was a creative outlet and something I genuinely enjoyed. Over time, I identified a gap in the market for consistency, reliability, and a premium experience. That’s when it evolved from passion into a business focused on solving a problem,” she said.
Like many entrepreneurs, she quickly discovered that passion alone is not enough.
“Cash flow and structure. Many underestimate how quickly a business can fail without systems. I had to develop financial discipline, strengthen operations, and prioritise profitability over sales.”
She pointed to a moment when the business truly began to take shape.
“Yes, when demand became consistent. But the real shift came when I transitioned from survival thinking to systems thinking. That’s when scaling became possible.”
Rather than chasing every customer or competing on price, Mwanza chose a different recipe for success.
“By not competing on price or trying to serve everyone, I focused on quality, branding, and customer experience, while remaining flexible enough to adjust strategy when necessary.”
Her innovative thinking has also led to the development of cake flow, a system designed to make managing orders smoother and more efficient.
On operational challenges, she said: "Orders were coming from multiple platforms, creating inefficiencies. Cake flow streamlines order management — from intake to delivery — ensuring consistency and control.”
When it comes to technology, Mwanza believes it should make life easier, not more complicated.
“We adopt tools that solve real operational problems.”
Looking back on her entrepreneurial journey, she emphasised the importance of discipline over sheer hustle.
“Cash flow is critical. Not every opportunity is beneficial. And systems outperform hustle in the long term.”
Her message to aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women, is simple but powerful.
“Start where you are, but think beyond limitations. Take ownership of your vision and finances, and build resilience.”
As the industry grows, Mwanza believes customers are also changing.
“Customers want more than a product in addition to more memorable moments. Operational efficiency is also becoming a competitive advantage.”
For young Zimbabweans keen to enter the baking business with limited resources, she offers practical advice.
“Start small but strategically. Focus on solving real problems and practise financial discipline early.”
Looking ahead, Mwanza says the next phase is about strengthening the foundations while exploring new opportunities.
“Consolidation and strategic growth. We are refining production systems, repositioning locations, and exploring new markets while scaling cake flow sustainably.”
In an industry where creativity meets commerce, Mwanza’s journey shows that with the right ingredients — vision, systems and a little patience — success can indeed rise beautifully.
