HARARE’S culinary calendar is set to rise to new heights as anticipation builds for the fourth edition of the Buttercup Sunroma Bakers Conference, a flagship gathering that blends craft, commerce, and community.

Scheduled for May 1 at the Golden Conifer, the event promises a vibrant showcase of Zimbabwe’s baking talent, underscored by innovation, collaboration and brand-building excellence.

Primrose Makotore, the face of Buttercup and vice chairperson of the Sunroma Buttercup Bakers Conference Organising Team, said preparations are complete for what she describes as a world-class experience.

She emphasised that the conference continues to evolve as a vital platform for bakers across the spectrum, ranging from beginners to seasoned professionals, to learn, network and grow.

“It’s all about sharing knowledge, showcasing talent and strengthening the baking community in Zimbabwe. This year’s theme is Bake It Legit, Building a Thriving Brand,” she said.

“The theme focuses on helping bakers move beyond just baking into building structured, sustainable, and profitable brands.

“Attendees can expect live demonstrations, insightful talks, hands-on learning, and exposure to new trends, techniques and business strategies in the baking industry.”

Makotore confirmed an engaging line-up of speakers, including experienced bakers, industry professionals, and representatives from key sponsors such as Codchem, Olivine Industries and Country Choice Foods.

“These are brands that are actively shaping the baking industry and bringing practical expertise to the conference. Yes, we will have competitions, which are always a highlight!

“This year includes a themed cake competition where bakers will showcase creativity inspired by our sponsors’ products, which includes and not limited to flavouring with Sunroma essences and colours, baking with Buttercup margarine, and finishing with premium sugars.

“It’s a great opportunity for participants to gain visibility, win prizes and challenge their skills.”

She added that the core objective remains empowering bakers through education, exposure, and opportunity.

“With this year’s theme, we are especially focused on helping bakers turn their passion into thriving brands.

“Since its inception, Sunroma Bakers has grown into a recognised community that supports and connects bakers.

“We’ve successfully hosted previous conferences, built partnerships with reputable brands, and created opportunities for bakers to learn and collaborate.”

The conference has earned a reputation for promoting innovation and excellence by exposing bakers to modern techniques and creative approaches, while reinforcing the importance of brand growth.

The Golden Conifer venue has been selected for its accessibility and professional setting.

Importantly, the event falls on Workers’ Day, a time when much of the nation pauses.

Yet, bakers, often working behind the scenes, continue to rise before dawn, kneading, mixing and creating the breads and confections that sustain daily life and celebrations alike.

The conference stands as both a tribute and a platform, recognising their resilience, skill, and contribution to Zimbabwe’s food culture.

Tickets are priced at US$80 for standard entry and US$100 for VIP access, offering attendees varying levels of engagement and exclusive benefits.

Participants are encouraged to arrive ready to engage fully including asking questions, connecting with peers, and exploring collaborations that can elevate their enterprises.

“It’s also important to participate actively and take full advantage of every opportunity available,” Makotore said.

“There will be plenty of networking opportunities, including interaction with speakers, sponsors and fellow bakers.”

As momentum builds, the Buttercup Sunroma Bakers Conference invites both aspiring and established bakers to invest in their craft and future.

With a compelling programme and a clear focus on sustainable growth, the event offers more than inspiration as it delivers practical tools for success.

Seats are limited and those eager to transform their passion into thriving brands are encouraged to secure their place early.
