IN Zimbabwe’s evolving culinary landscape, where tradition meets innovation, baker Primrose Makotore (PM) is carving out a name defined by precision, passion and purpose.
In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style reporter Tendai Sauta (ND), Makotore reflected on her journey in the baking industry and her role in nurturing Zimbabwe’s growing baking community. Below are excerpts from the interview:
ND: Congratulations on your success as a baker and your regular participation in the Sunroma Bakers Conference and Competitions. What inspired your journey?
PM: My passion stems from a deep love for creating and bringing joy to people. Baking is more than just a skill; it’s an art form. I began by baking for family and friends and their encouragement pushed me to pursue it professionally. What started as a small passion has grown into a fulfilling business.
ND: As one of the organisers of the Sunroma Buttercup Baking Conference, what sets your work apart?
PM: I’m driven by a commitment to building and empowering the baking community. The conference, held annually on May 1, has become an important platform for bakers across Zimbabwe. Preparation involves careful planning, coordinating stakeholders and ensuring value through both competition and learning. My focus is on maintaining fairness, professionalism and high standards.
ND: Tell us about your business and how you balance entrepreneurship with creativity.
PM: I specialise in baked goods and catering, offering a variety of snacks and celebration items. Although I don’t operate from a physical shop, I’ve built a strong brand through consistency and quality service. Balancing business and passion requires discipline, planning and dedication.
ND: What role does baking play in Zimbabwean culture?
PM: Baking is central to celebrations such as weddings, birthdays and church gatherings. It brings people together. I enjoy incorporating local flavours into my work, giving my creations a unique identity while maintaining a modern finish.
ND: Your products are praised for flavour and presentation. What’s your approach?
PM: I prioritise quality ingredients, consistency and elegant presentation. I favour clean, timeless designs over excessive detail. My signature offerings include celebration cakes and customised themed cakes that stand out in both taste and design.
ND: What advice can you give aspiring bakers?
PM: Start with what you have and remain consistent. Practice, patience and continuous learning are key. Attending events and networking can open doors and build confidence.
ND: How has the Sunroma Bakers Conference influenced your journey?
PM: It has provided opportunities to learn new techniques, connect with peers and gain industry exposure. It has played a significant role in shaping my growth and keeping me inspired.
ND: How do you navigate challenges in Zimbabwe’s economic climate?
PM: Rising ingredient costs are a challenge, but innovation and careful resource management help. My passion and the joy my work brings to others keep me motivated.
ND: What has been the most rewarding aspect of your journey?
PM: Being part of people’s special moments is incredibly fulfilling. I’ve also received national recognition, including awards for Best Fresh Cream Cake Decorator and Most Consistent Baker of the Year, which I won twice. I’ve also had the opportunity to present at workshops and share skills with other bakers.
ND: What lies ahead for you?
PM: I aim to expand my product range, collaborate with industry players and mentor up-and-coming bakers. My goal is to grow both my business and the baking industry in Zimbabwe.
