THE Regional Electricity Regulators’ Association (Rera) of Southern Africa will next week hold its 11th annual conference at Elephant Hills Hotel in Victoria Falls.

The conference will be held under the theme Leveraging the Sadc region’s energy potential through an integrated approach.
Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) chief executive officer Gloria Magombo told NewsDay that the conference was aimed at exchanging notes and promoting regional integrations as well as harmonising energy regulation policies.
Magombo said the region was facing power deficit on the supply side against demand and the meeting would discuss solutions to the crisis.
Rera is a subsidiary of the Sadc secretariat and is headquartered in Namibia.

Some of the issues tabled for discussion include power supply and demand in the region, developing regional electricity market and development of an African clean energy corridor.
The conference will also discuss grid integration of renewable energy, independent power producers projects and electricity tariff and performance indicators.
The region, according to Southern Africa Power Pool, has a peak demand of 54 000 megawatts (MW) against a generation capacity of 51 000MW.
The region reduced its power deficit to 3 000MW in the last year and will add another 27 000MW by 2018 as countries ramp up electricity generation to meet growing demand.
