Zim to host All-Africa Senior Squash champs

ZIMBABWE will host the 2022 All-Africa Senior Squash Championship, which will be the first port of call for new Squash Federation of Africa (SFA) president Lucky Mlilo and will be the first major tournament following his election last week.

The Zimbabwean yesterday told NewsDay Sport plans are afoot for the hosting of the competition with junior championships set for Mauritius.

The tournaments are usually held during the Easter Holidays.

“The sport was suspended in most countries but has resumed with a lot of measures introduced to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We are now planning for the 2022 All-Africa juniors and seniors championships which should take place in Mauritius and Zimbabwe respectively. The 2021 World Juniors championship which was scheduled to take place in Egypt has been postponed. All-Africa juniors championships are traditionally played during Easter,” Mlilo said.

Zimbabwe has hosted the Zimbabwe Squash Open for 12 years save for last year when the sport was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The status of the game now is mainly centred on training. We only resumed activities in March and by then the traditional Matabeleland, Mashonaland and Zimbabwe Juniors tournaments that are normally played in February and March could not take place. The premier Zimbabwe Squash Open championships that take place in August every year is unlikely to take place.

Mlilo, also a board member of the World Squash Federation (WSF) by virtue of being elected SFA president, said he is honoured by the trust that has been bestowed on him.
