Kim: A rising star in music industry

The 25-year-old musician, who is riding high with her latest single titled Crush, told Standard Style that she was inspired by the need to make a positive impact in society.

Afro-pop musician Kimberley “Kim” Makumbe says music is more than just a way to express herself and a platform for her to communicate with the world.

The 25-year-old musician, who is riding high with her latest single titled Crush, told Standard Style that she was inspired by the need to make a positive impact in society.

She has featured on Ex-Q’s latest album titled Enoch with hits Must Be Love and Mashoko.

“Music breaks down barriers of race, gender, geographical location, and so on,” she said.

“Because my vision is to be remembered as someone who impacted more than a billion lives, music is one way I plan to use on achieving that goal.”

Kim describes herself as an experimental pop artist, meaning that her “music can span many different genres, from familiar sounds to ones you’ve never heard before”.

Inspired by Ammara Brown, Kim began her musical career in 2019.

“I consider Ammara a big sister in the industry because she helped me understand the difference between passion and purpose,” Kim said.

“Ammara explained to me that simply having enthusiasm for something isn't enough; you need to find a way to use your gifts to make a positive impact on the world.

“I have held onto these words ever since.”

Kim is deeply passionate about music and is fully invested in the industry.

“I do a lot of things including writing songs for others, doing studio backing vocals, voiceovers, commercial jingles and working as a presenter and copywriter,” she said.

She is also a big music business fan and is currently the Zimbabwean partner for the Music Business Academy for Africa, where she helps others in the industry learn more about the business side of music.

Kim said she was working on a new single titled Ndendichitodawo, which she hopes to release soon.
