Mapeza hopes for solidity in defence

FC Platinum gaffer Norman Mapeza is praying his team regains its defensive stamina, having been breached in four of the last five matches.

They have conceded five goals against Simba Bhora, Highlanders, Bulawayo Chiefs and Caps United.

Mapeza's men only managed to keep a clean sheet against Cranborne Bullets, who they beat 1-0.

They managed to come back from behind against Simba Bhora, Bulawayo Chiefs and Caps United to avoid defeat but failed to do so against Highlanders.

And Mapeza is praying his defenders regain their mojo to avoid conceding in the next matches, starting with Triangle tomorrow.

“Triangle has done well in recent games. They won two games, with a draw and a defeat which is not bad.

“This is a new team, so most of the guys will work hard and they will want to prove a point.

“Mentally and physically we are ready for the game. For us it's not about the character.

“I’m worried about the situation because we have been conceding. Look at our last five games, we conceded in each and every game.

“We are trying to address that and we have tried to do it in training. Sometimes, you can recover, sometimes you can fail to. It happened when we played against Highlanders, we couldn't recover.

“It’s a habit which we need to change. It’s never a good lesson, like I said; don't give your opponent a chance to punch you. I'm sure, we'll see improvement in the next match,” he said.

FC Platinum sit on second spot on the table with 10 points, one less than Caps United who themselves have been defensively sound, conceding just one goal so far this season.

Last season, FC Platinum built their success on a solid defence where they conceded just 14 goals from 34 matches.

In tomorrow’s match, Mapeza hopes his side can make full use of home comforts.

“We need to maximise on our home advantage. Harare teams do that. We need to maximize on that,” Mapeza said.

The veteran gaffer has had to do without the services of Gift Bello who has been nursing an injury.
