Loneliness is not just a passing emotion. Increasingly, it is being recognised as a public health crisis.
In 2023, the United States Surgeon General declared loneliness more dangerous than smoking fifteen cigarettes a day.
That statement may sound dramatic, but it reflects a reality that is not confined to America.
Zimbabwe, too, is grappling with the silent epidemic of isolation, particularly among young people and the elderly.
Into this void has stepped a new kind of companion: Artificial Intelligence.
Around the world, millions are turning to AI chatbots for comfort, conversation, and even intimacy. Platforms such as Character.ai and Replika have grown into billion-dollar industries, offering what modern life often fails to provide: consistent, patient, and unconditional attention. But as the tragic story of a Florida teenager shows, this antidote can sometimes prove fatal.
So, what does this mean for Zimbabwe? Should we embrace AI companions as a cure for loneliness, or should we treat them as a dangerous substitute for human connection?
Zimbabwe is a society in transition. Urbanisation, migration, and economic pressures have reshaped family and community life. Many young people spend long hours online, while the elderly often live apart from their children, who have migrated for work. Churches and extended families, once the bedrock of social support, are struggling to keep pace with the demands of modern life.

Loneliness here takes different forms. For the youth, it is often tied to unemployment, academic stress, or the pressures of social media. For the elderly, it is linked to physical isolation and the breakdown of traditional support systems. In both cases, the temptation to seek companionship in digital spaces is strong.
AI companions promise to fill this gap. They are always available, never complain, and never demand reciprocity. For a teenager who feels misunderstood, or for a pensioner in the diaspora, an AI chatbot may seem like a lifeline. There is no denying the appeal. Unlike therapy, which is expensive and scarce in Zimbabwe, AI chatbots are cheap or free.
They are available 24/7, offering a listening ear when human support is absent. They can even be tailored to individual preferences, speaking Shona, Ndebele, or English, and adopting cultural nuances. In a country where mental health services are underfunded and stigma remains high, AI could play a supportive role. Imagine a chatbot designed specifically for Zimbabwean youth, offering encouragement in exam season, or one for the elderly, reminding them to take medication and providing conversation in their mother tongue.
Yet, the dangers are real. The cases in various courts illustrate how emotional dependence on AI can spiral into tragedy. When a machine becomes the centre of someone’s emotional world, the line between reality and illusion blurs. For Zimbabwe, the risks include exploitation of minors, who may form unhealthy attachments to AI companions, mistaking programmed responses for genuine care.
There is also the danger of psychological harm, since AI cannot truly empathise. Its responses, however convincing, are generated patterns, not human understanding. Commercial predation is another risk, as many platforms operate on a freemium model, luring users with free intimacy and locking deeper features behind paywalls. For a teenager skipping lunch to afford a subscription, the cost is not just financial but nutritional and emotional.
Finally, there is the risk of cultural displacement, as AI companions may erode traditional forms of support, weakening family bonds and community structures that are already under strain.
The question is not whether AI companions will arrive in Zimbabwe. They already have.
The question is how we respond.
As an ethics specialist, I see three critical areas for action.
First, regulation. We must establish clear guidelines on the use of AI companions, especially for minors. Safeguards should prevent exploitative design and ensure transparency about what these systems can and cannot do.
Second, education. Parents, teachers, and communities need to understand both the promise and the peril. Awareness campaigns can help families recognise signs of unhealthy dependence and encourage balanced use of technology. Third, local innovation. Instead of importing platforms designed in Silicon Valley, Zimbabwe should develop its own culturally-sensitive AI companions.
These could be built to reinforce, not replace, community values, encouraging young people to connect with peers, and reminding the elderly of church gatherings or family events.
We must resist the temptation to frame AI companionship as either wholly good or wholly bad. It is both an opportunity and a threat. The real issue is not whether machines can cure loneliness, but whether we allow them to redefine what human connection means. In Zimbabwe, where resilience and community spirit remain strong despite economic hardship, AI should be seen as a supplement, not a substitute. It can support, but it must never replace, the bonds of family, friendship, and faith.
Loneliness is a killer, and AI offers a seductive antidote. But as the tragedies abroad remind us, the cure can sometimes be worse than the disease.
Zimbabwe must tread carefully, balancing innovation with ethics and ensuring that technology serves humanity, not the other way round.
The models will get better. The voices will get warmer. The relationships will grow harder to distinguish from the real thing. But our task is clear: to protect the essence of human connection, even as we embrace the tools of the digital age.
What we do next will say everything about what we believe relationships are for, whether they are to be nurtured, protected, and cherished, or packaged, tiered, and sold to whoever can afford the premium subscription.
