A RHUMBA group on Saturday night walked away with a BMW car after getting more votes in the people’s choice awards at the Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAA) held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.
This comes after the delightful, fashion extravaganza in which a full hall of Bulawayo arts enthusiasts assembled in the evening, giving away awards to the deserved crews and individuals.
Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, the Insimbi Zezhwane group leader, Meluleki “Brema” Moyo, extended his appreciation for the recognition.
The group lost leaders Elvis 'MaEli' Mathe and Thembinkosi 'Maviri' Mpofu in a road traffic accident early this year.
“We thank you all for the support we are getting as a group, we promise to produce more music for you to enjoy,” Moyo said.
The people’s choice award was voted for through ballot papers on the day of the event.
The group also walked away with the Outstanding “Ma Eli” Tshibilika/ Rhumba act award against Amathonga Amahle, Godolude, Madlela and Clement Magwaza.
Among other winners, was NiteFreak’s “Premier GAO Remix”, for the outstanding song of the year and Club DJ, Black Umfolosi for the outstanding Imbube/ Acapella group act.

Anele Sithole won the Outstanding Male dancer, Musawenkosi Sibanda and Charmaine Mudau got the outstanding theatre actress award, Sekunjalo maAfrica won Outstanding Dance Ensemble, Zenzo Nyathi scooped the Outstanding Theatre Actor award, and Mbulelo Mpofu won the Outstanding Journalist award.
Fans and participants at the awards gave their suggestions for the next edition of the awards.
Bulawayo graphics designer’s view was on the absence of their category in the arts industry as they felt their contribution into the arts sector was being ignored.
Representing the graphics designers, Simbarashe Maengera said, “My contribution would be to be a bit more inclusive on other less prominent forms of art which include things like illustration and graphics design, of which I am a practising artist of those forms."
“I am thinking if we had them as actual categories and not have them buried under multiple sub categories because it is an art form that is underappreciated, it would benefit from having that light shone on it.”
Maengera said the other categories and organisation of the event seems to be improving yearly.
He applauded organisers and the team behind the awards.
