ZOC unveils 11-member team for Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics

The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) has officially announced a talented 11-member athlete delegation to represent the nation at the upcoming Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Dakar, Senegal. 

Running from October 31 to November 13, 2026, this historic event marks the first time an Olympic event will be hosted on African soil.

 Team Zimbabwe will compete across seven sports disciplines, led by a vibrant group of young prodigies who have already begun making waves on the continental and international circuits. 

The squad comprises four swimmers, two track and field athletes, and one representative each in cycling, equestrian, judo, rowing, and triathlon.

Several athletes head to Dakar backed by impressive international resumes, positioning them as serious contenders on the global stage. 

As Zimbabwe’s top-ranked youth female triathlete, Rachel O'Donoghue enters the games with a World Triathlon Elite Ranking of 390 and an African Continental Elite Ranking of 6. 

An Elite-Tier Bronze Medalist, her stellar 2026 campaign includes a blistering 1:06:14 finish at the Africa Triathlon Junior Cup in Mossel Bay, alongside a Silver medal in the Youth Women's division at the World Triathlon Development Regional Cup.

Rohnan Nicholson has similarly asserted himself as a dominant force in African youth cycling. He is a double National Junior Champion and secured a Silver medal at the 2025 African Youth Games. 

His grit on the tarmac was further proven in the elite ranks with a podium finish at the Tour de Angola, walking away with a Bronze medal in the Junior General Classification. 

In rowing, Arianna Robinson has experienced a rapid rise representing the prestigious Peterhouse Girls School Boat Club. 

Her standout performances are highlighted by a gold medal in the Junior Women's Under-18 Double category at the South African Senior National Rowing Championships, which also helped her earn a spot at the 2026 World Rowing Under-19 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. With the countdown to Dakar 2026 underway, Team Zimbabwe stands as a testament to the country's rising sporting excellence, ready to make their mark on home soil for Africa's historic Olympic moment.

The athlete roster features Prudence Kasuwa competing in the Women’s Discus Throw and Tanatswa Magwindi in the Men's Triple Jump. 

Rohnan Nicholson will take on the Men's Road Race in cycling, Terry Angelos will represent the nation in Equestrian Jumping, and Makanaka Nherera will compete in the Women's -78kg judo division. 

The swimming team consists of Alexis Johnsen in the Women's have 50m Freestyle, Daniella Viki in the Women's 800m Freestyle, Connor Grist in the Men's 400m Freestyle, and Nkomazana Kwandokuhle in the Men's 50m Butterfly.

 Arianna Robinson will line up for the Women’s Solo C1x Coastal Rowing Beach Sprints, and Rachel O'Donoghue will compete in the Female Individual Sprint triathlon.

The technical and coaching staff accompanying the squad includes Letwin Kudakwashe for athletics, Elsie Mahumbe for cycling, Ricky Johnstone for equestrian, and Lazarus Arufandika for judo.

 The swimming team will be guided by coach Cole Tudor. Rowing will be supported by coach Zaal Kerrie alongside boat handler Bo Ka, while Pamela Fulton will oversee the triathlon discipline.
