INNOCENT Kaia's composed unbeaten 76 put Zimbabwe in an enviable position at the close of play on Day One of the one-off Test against Bangladesh at Harare Sports Club yesterday, with the hosts on 136/1 and trailing by just four runs with nine wickets in hand.

Kaia anchored the reply with 76 from 108 balls, hitting nine fours, as Zimbabwe responded positively to bowling Bangladesh out for 140 earlier in the day. He shared an 89-run opening partnership with Ben Curran, who struck 42 off 51 balls before being dismissed by Khaled Ahmed. Brendan Taylor was unbeaten on 17 at the close as Zimbabwe reached 136/1 from 34 overs at a run rate of 4.00.

Earlier, Zimbabwe's pace attack dismantled Bangladesh's batting in the first session after captain Richard Ngarava won the toss and elected to field. The decision was vindicated as the visitors were bowled out for 140 in 47.2 overs before tea.

Newman Nyamhuri was the standout bowler, finishing with four wickets for 61 runs as he ripped through Bangladesh's lower order.

The tourists had appeared relatively comfortable at 113/3 before losing their last seven wickets for a mere 27 runs. Ngarava led from the front with two for 18 from 10 overs, including four maidens, while Blessing Muzarabani was the most economical with two for 19 from 15 overs and eight maidens. Brad Evans also contributed two from 30.

Mominul Haque provided the only meaningful resistance for Bangladesh, top-scoring with 60 off 81 balls and striking 12 boundaries. No other Bangladesh batter reached 20.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made 19 off 73 deliveries while Mushfiqur Rahim managed just nine.

A buoyant crowd at Harare Sports Club cheered both the bowling display and the subsequent batting response.

With Kaia well set at the crease and nine wickets remaining, Zimbabwe are ideally placed to claim a first-innings lead when play resumes on Day 2 this morning.
