Kaia’s domestic dominance seals Zimbabwe Test recall

INNOCENT Kaia’s prolific domestic campaign has earned him a recall to Zimbabwe’s Test setup as the hosts prepare to face Bangladesh in a one-off Test beginning at Harare Sports Club on Sunday.

The right-handed batsman was among the standout performers in the 2025-2026 domestic season, finishing as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the Logan Cup with 409 runs from eight innings.

His campaign included two centuries, a composed 176 off 252 deliveries against Mountaineers and 100 off 192 against Eagles as well as a 56 against Rhinos.

Kaia saved his most dominant cricket for the Pro 50 Championship, where he finished as the leading run-scorer with 500 runs from eight innings, registering three centuries and a half-century in the 50-over format.

He then carried that form onto the international stage, striking a century for Zimbabwe A during their recent tour of Bangladesh in Bogra to stake his claim for higher honours.

Chevrons head coach Justin Sammons acknowledged Kaia’s consistency as the primary driver of his recall.

“Obviously, Innocent had a really good domestic season and followed it up with a good 100 in Bangladesh, which is great,” Sammons told NewsDay Sport.

The coach also pointed to a broader culture of run-scoring that has taken hold within the Zimbabwe setup, with Tadiwanashe Marumani and Tafadzwa Tsiga similarly catching the eye.

“Several guys also got a couple of hundreds domestically... they’ve even got a few hundreds, which is something that we are looking for. That's important now,” Sammons said.

“Look at Tsiga, who’s gone and got four domestic hundreds, which is also amazing. So, yeah, they’ve obviously earned their spot, which is great to see.”

The Zimbabwe coach stressed that converting in the domestic arena has always been a prerequisite for national selection, a standard he intends to maintain.

“We want guys pushing from a point of view of making hundreds domestically.

“That’s what we’re really trying to drive. I'm very happy with the squad.”

Sammons also addressed the bowling department, where fast bowler Richard Ngarava’s fitness remains a concern heading into the match.

“We’ve got a good fast bowling unit if Richie pulls up fit.

“We’ll see how the next few days go in terms of that.”

With several players pushing from outside the squad, the coach welcomed the competition as a sign of a healthier programme.

“There’s guys that are not in the squad that are also knocking on the door and have been knocking on the door,” Sammons said.

“They have put decent numbers on the board. Definitely there is competition, which is healthy, and it’s what you need for guys to not get complacent, but to keep pushing themselves to get better.”

Zimbabwe and Bangladesh will contest the lone Test from Sunday, with the two sides also scheduled to meet in a series of One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals to follow.
