The Hills Luxury Golf Course on track for 2027 opening

THE countdown has officially begun. With less than a year to go before its scheduled launch, The Hills Luxury Golf Course is on track for an official opening in February 2027.

A recent progress assessment at the site shows that all 18 holes have been shaped, with nine already fully planted. The final phase of planting is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, after which attention will shift to the crucial grow-in period to prepare the fairways and greens to international standards.

Management has confirmed that the course will be playable before the end of the first quarter of 2027, allowing golfers an early opportunity to experience the facility before its official launch. Interest in the project continues to grow, with the driving range attracting increasing numbers of visitors and prospective members.

The facility is being designed by renowned golf course architect Peter Matkovich, whose portfolio includes more than 30 acclaimed golf courses worldwide, among them Leopard Rock in Zimbabwe, Arabella in South Africa, and La Réserve in Mauritius.

Matkovich has spent nearly three years refining the layout, which aims to combine visual appeal with a challenging but accessible playing experience.

The golf course sits at the heart of WestProp Holdings' US$280 million mixed-use development, which will ultimately comprise 862 luxury residential stands within a secure estate.

WestProp Holdings chief executive officer Ken Sharpe said the project represents more than a sporting facility.

“It is a statement of Zimbabwe’s ability to deliver world-class sporting facilities. We are creating a destination that will attract both local players and international visitors, strengthening golf tourism and showcasing our country's potential,” he said.

Sharpe said the development forms part of a broader vision to position Zimbabwe as a leading golfing destination.

“Golf is a lifestyle, and The Hills is designed to meet global standards while celebrating Zimbabwe’s natural beauty. We aim is to position Zimbabwe as a premier golfing destination, where visitors can play not only in Harare but also in Bulawayo, Victoria Falls, Nyanga, Vumba, Mutare and Chiredzi. The Hills completes this circuit, offering golfers a truly unique experience,” he said.

Project partners have endorsed the development, saying it has the potential to strengthen Harare’s status as a regional sporting hub. The estate is located near the National Sports Stadium and the National Hockey Stadium.

Beyond golf, the development is being positioned as a year-round sports and lifestyle destination. WestProp has partnered with tennis stars Benjamin and Courtney Lock to establish a tennis academy on the estate.

Additional facilities planned for the development include swimming, padel and five-a-side football amenities.

With construction progressing according to schedule, developers remain confident that The Hills Luxury Golf Course will open in February 2027, adding a new dimension to Zimbabwe’s sporting and tourism offering.
