Antoine Semenyo returns to the Vitality Stadium on Tuesday night in a Premier League title showdown that carries enormous implications for Manchester City's championship hopes, with the Ghanaian winger set to face his former club Bournemouth in what promises to be one of the most emotionally charged fixtures of the season.
Semenyo, who departed Bournemouth for City in January, was in typically good-humoured form when reflecting on his former club's remarkable unbeaten run since his departure. "I was the problem," he laughed. "I'm happy they're doing so well and hopefully they get into Europe too."
But the jokes aside, Semenyo was clear-eyed about the challenge awaiting City. "It's going to be tough. They've got something to fight for so they're going to make it tough. It won't be weird going back, it'll be good to see everyone again. I still speak to them every day. They've been giving a hard time, saying they're going to kick me, but it'll be good to see them all. I'm looking forward to the challenge, hopefully we win."
City manager Pep Guardiola, who is rumoured to be leaving the club beyond this season, will arrive for the fixture buoyed by FA Cup success but cautious about Bournemouth's quality. "They're playing for European competition and I don't know the last time they lost. It's an incredible team, the most energetic, rhythm and pressing in the Premier League," Guardiola said.
For City, victory is non-negotiable as they attempt to keep their title hopes alive ahead of a final day showdown against Aston Villa.
