The Crystal Candy National Chess tournament, which concludes on Monday, has become one of the biggest chess events involving young people, where they showcase their incredible talent while proudly representing their schools.

Over 1 000 chess players from all of the country’s provinces are expected to take part in the tournament.

Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) official Blessing Jemani is excited about the growth of the tournament.

“It is an exciting time for chess in Zimbabwe. This is the biggest tournament by far, bringing together 1 000 players in the arena,” he said.

“Hosting this developmental tournament in Zvishavane, a historically significant area for chess, adds to the excitement.

“The event at Errymaple, one of Zimbabwe’s largest schools, speaks volumes about the future of chess in the region.”

Jenami added: “Among the teams to watch is Lewis Kahoba’s team Dominican Convent.

“With 28 students from the national finals and several players preparing for a tournament in Kenya, they are a force to be reckoned with.

“Mr Kahoba’s dedication shines through and his team embodies the true spirit of Crystal Candy.”

Going into the tournament as Harare provincial competition winners and defending champions, Dominican Convent are ready to defend their title for senior schools.

Their legacy of excellence and teamwork makes them a formidable presence in high-pressure matches.

At their provincial competition, their team comprising Ropafadzo Chikwanda, Ropafadzo Gwatidzo, Rosemary Omiti and Maita Mangwende, among others, was virtually unplayable.

Gwehava Primary School are renowned for their strategic brilliance and are determined to retain their title in the Junior school competition.

Their fierce determination promises to add an exciting edge to this year’s competition.

Mbeure Primary School from Chipinge is a rising star team bursting onto the scene with fresh energy and their eagerness to showcase their skills could lead to thrilling surprises and unexpected victories.

Last year, the grand finale was held at Northlea High School in Bulawayo.
