ZIMBABWE Cricket's aim to build a legacy of talent development through the National Premier League (NPL) T20 Blast gathers momentum with the domestic premier club 20 over competition starting on a blistering note.

The tournament nearing its half-way stage, has already produced explosive centuries, exceptional five-fours and emmaculate fielding performances as the top eight cricket clubs battle for supremacy.

Last Wednesday fans were in for a treat as the first milestones of the season began to trickle in. First it was newboys SOGO Rangers' Jayden Schadenhorf who scored the tournament's first 100. The opener scored 110 off 47 balls, including six fours and 10 sixes, as Rangers beat Rainbow by 70 runs at Harare Sports Club.

At Old Hararians Sports Club, Panashe Taruvinga scored 100 off 54 balls, the tournament's second century as Gladiators dismissed Queens Sports Club by 38 runs. He smashed 12 boundaries and four maximums.

The first five-wicket haul of the tournament belonged to ever-green Takashinga Patriots 1 spinner, Tapiwa Mufudza (pictured). The exceptional spinner picked up five wickets for nine runs in four overs, four of the scalps coming in one over. Patriots 1 restricted Westside to a paltry 73 runs all out before reaching the target inside 7.1 overs winning the match by 10 runs.

With all these highlights coming early in the tournament, ZC has got every reason to smile.

Eagles general manager and NPL T20 Blast tournament director Wonder Chisango applauded ZC for this initiative.

"The NPL T20 Blast serves as a vital platform for showcasing Zimbabwean cricket talent by providing local players with the opportunity to compete at a high level in a dynamic and competitive environment," Chisango told The Sports Hub.

"Since the matches are being streamed on our YouTube and Facebook pages, players are having the opportunity to showcase their skills to a wide audience. This exposure significantly increases their visibility, enhancing their chances of being selected for provincial and representative teams in Zimbabwe, as well as attracting the attention of scouts from international leagues."

The country's top eight clubs have seven rounds of matches to prove their worth and fight for the next phase.

"ZC aims to build a legacy of enhanced grassroots participation, increased fan engagement, and the development of local talent through the NPL T20 Blast," added Chisango.

"By creating a prestigious tournament that showcases Zimbabwean players, the organisation hopes to inspire the next generation of cricketers and cultivate a thriving cricket culture within the country."

Today action continues with four round robin matches. Takashinga Cricket Club in Highfield sees Gladiators Cricket Club play against defending champions Takashinga Patriots 2 in the morning. SOGO Rangers date Takashinga Patriots 1 in the afternoon encounter at the same venue. At Harare Sports Club Westside are up against Queens in the morning while Mbizo play against Rainbow in the afternoon.
