THE three major football stadia in Bulawayo will be shut down for the next two months to allow the council to improve the turf at the facilities, the local authority has said.

Barbourfields, Luveve and White City will be closed to the public from Friday this week to February 15 next year, in time for the 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season which usually starts in March.

The Bulawayo City Council yesterday flighted an advertisement in the Press about the shutdown.

The council is taking advantage of the rainy season to spruce up the turf.

“Closure of Barbourfields, Luveve and White City stadia: Notice is hereby given to members of the public that the above-mentioned stadia have been closed to the public from Friday, December 23 2022 to Sunday, February 15, 2023. The closure is to facilitate maintenance work aimed at improving the turf in these stadia,” said Christopher Dube, the city town clerk.

Barbourfields Stadium, banned by Confederation of African Football from hosting international games, is home to Highlanders and relegated Bulawayo City while Luveve Stadium is home to Chicken Inn and Bulawayo Chiefs.

White City is mostly used by the Zifa Southern Region Division One League teams and junior sides while it is also used for athletics.
