THUNDERSTORMS that hit some parts of the country in the last fortnight left a trail of destruction in Mberengwa and destroyed schools, homesteads, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
Mberengwa East legislator, Marko Raidza said two schools in his constituency had their roofs blown away while several homesteads were destroyed.
“The rains, which were accompanied by strong winds and lightning, destroyed two schools in the area that is Mbirishava and another in the Ruraungwe community,”Raidza said in an interview.
“The roofs were blown off and a church in Ruraungwe was also destroyed while several other homesteads were destroyed.”
He added: “We also had critical infrastructure such as roads, electricity poles and bridges destroyed.”
Villagers in the area said the destruction of bridges and roads had become a perennial problem and called on the government to rehabilitate the aging infrastructure.
“Over the years it has become a norm that when we enter the rainy season accessibility to other areas becomes impossible after rivers are flooded and bridges destroyed,” said Jerifanos Moyo.

“A few years ago we had a situation where the rains left the Mberengwa-Zvishavane road cut off with motorists using the Gwanda route to access Mberengwa and we appeal to government to relook into the state of roads and bridges in the district with a view of rehabilitating and reconstructing them.”
