Masvingo commissions US$1,2m fleet, opens new maternity unit

The City of Masvingo has commissioned a US$1,2 million engineering fleet and officially opened a new 20-bed maternity unit in Runyararo suburb, marking a major milestone in the city’s infrastructure modernisation drive and efforts to improve access to quality healthcare.

The projects were commissioned by the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira, who said the investments demonstrated government’s commitment to strengthening service delivery and improving the lives of Zimbabweans.

Chadzamira, said the newly acquired engineering fleet would be deployed immediately to support preparations for the forthcoming Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo, rehabilitate and maintain roads, install comprehensive stormwater drainage systems, undertake gravel extraction for roadworks and accelerate the development and environmental management of the Cambria Landfill Project.

“The investment reflects the city’s commitment to improving service delivery and building resilient urban infrastructure,” he said.

Chadzamira also officially opened the 20-bed Runyararo Maternity Unit, describing it as a transformative investment in maternal and child healthcare.

The facility is expected to improve access to maternity services for residents of Runyararo, Victoria Range and surrounding suburbs, who previously travelled to Northwest and Mucheke clinics for maternity care.

He said bringing services closer to communities would reduce unsafe home deliveries, improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes and ensure expectant mothers receive timely, quality healthcare.

“A healthy nation is the foundation of a prosperous society, and investments in modern infrastructure and healthcare are central to the attainment of Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2),” Chadzamira said.

He added that the completion of the maternity unit reflected the successful implementation of performance contracts by the city’s mayor and town clerk, demonstrating accountable, responsive and results-oriented local governance.

“The commissioning of the US$1,2 million engineering fleet and the opening of the Runyararo Maternity Unit are clear evidence that Masvingo is making steady progress in improving the quality of life for its residents. These investments will strengthen service delivery, enhance healthcare access and support infrastructure development that is essential for economic growth,” Chadzamira said.

“As a province, we remain committed to working with the City of Masvingo to ensure these projects deliver lasting benefits to our communities while contributing to the attainment of Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2.”

The projects also align with the National Health Strategy and Sustainable Development Goal 3, which seeks to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

The commissioning comes as local authorities continue to modernise infrastructure and expand access to essential public services in line with the government’s vision of building an empowered, prosperous and upper-middle-income Zimbabwe by 2030.
