River Valley Group has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Zimbabwe’s liberation heritage after making a major contribution towards this year’s Heroes Day commemorations at the Heroes Acre in Tongogara, Shurugwi.
The mining and land development company supported the Midlands province commemorations with catering services, tents and a public address system, while also donating more than 1 000 litres of fuel to traditional chiefs, government officials and security services agencies.
The group further honoured widows of liberation war fighters, traditional leaders and selected dignitaries with commemorative T-shirts, caps, flowers and grocery hampers.River Valley Group CEO Smelly Dube said the company regarded its participation as a national obligation rather than simply a corporate donation.
“We are only playing our national duty by making this financial and material commitment, as we want to honour those who fought for our freedom, and this is non-negotiable for us,” said Dube.
She said the company remained committed to supporting national programmes, particularly in communities where it operates.
“We are always happy to join other companies and organisations in national events like this, because we are a company rooted in communities, especially here in Shurugwi where we do mining and land development operations,” she added.
Group chairman Mncedisi Dube, who could not attend the commemorations in person, said the company’s annual gesture was rooted in gratitude to the men and women whose sacrifices paved the way for Zimbabwe’s independence.
“The River Valley Group owes its very existence to the sacrifices made by both our living and fallen heroes. This annual gesture is our humble way of showing appreciation for the foundation they laid for our prosperity,” he said.
