A 28 year-old commuter omnibus driver was sentenced to an effective 36 months in prison by the Bulawayo magistrates’ court after being convicted of two counts of culpable homicide and negligent driving.
The court heard that on January 28 this year, at around 1930 hours, Simbarashe Chokumanyara lost control of a speeding Toyota Hiace along 6th Avenue between Herbert Chitepo and Lobengula Streets, Bulawayo ploughing into pedestrians.
The crash killed Christopher Mukuwapasi (42), who died at Mpilo Hospital and Lizwe Meluleki Ncube (45), who died at the scene.
Twelve others sustained injuries ranging from fractures and pelvic dislocations to cuts and bruises.
The court found the offender was negligent on four counts.
On the first count, he was sentenced to 24 months improsonment of which 9 months were suspended.
On the second count, he was sentenced to 12 months of which 6 months were suspended.
He will serve an effective three-year jail term.
