BEITBRIDGE, Jul 16, (Southern Eye Live)- The Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) has expressed concern over the alleged abduction of anti-government activist Bhekimpilo Mbedzi by suspected State security agents on Wednesday.
The party called on authorities to disclose his whereabouts and ensure his safety.
Mbedzi, a known critic of the recent constitutional amendments that extended President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term by two more years, was allegedly abducted in his home town, Beitbridge.
Sources said he was bundled into a white double cab vehicle and driven to an unknown destination.
In a statement issued this Thursday, the opposition party said it was closely monitoring the situation and hoped Mbedzi was safe and unharmed.
The MRP said government has an obligation to respect and guarantee all citizens' constitutional rights and freedoms, adding that there should be no room for arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances and intimidation.
"Zimbabwe's Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, freedom of association and the right to demonstrate and present petitions peacefully, urging state institutions to uphold those rights without fear or favour," the party said.
The MRP also appealed to State security agents to allow citizens to exercise their constitutional rights to demonstrate peacefully.

"If Mbedzi is in the custody of State security agents, he should either be released immediately and returned safely to his family. If he is being lawfully detained, authorities should promptly disclose his whereabouts and ensure that all his constitutional and legal rights are respected," the party said.
At the time of publication, Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Chiratidzo Dube had not responded to questions sent to her regarding the matter.
