Over 250 undocumented immigrants have been arrested in Johannesburg during a major multidisciplinary raid known as Operation Shanela.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) conducted the operation across Hillbrow and Johannesburg Central, aiming to combat crime, enforce strict immigration laws, and enhance public safety.
This initiative is part of an ongoing provincial strategy to address illegal immigration and related criminal activities through strengthened law enforcement interventions.
However, the crackdown occurs against a backdrop of escalating anti-foreigner sentiment across South Africa, often incited by vigilante groups and politically linked organisations.
Groups such as March and March have been filmed roaming streets with traditional weapons, accusing foreign nationals of displacing local workers and stealing jobs. The environment has grown increasingly hostile, with violent mobs now targeting not just undocumented residents, but also documented black immigrants.
In response to this rising threat, Zimbabwe and several other African nations have begun repatriating their citizens to ensure their safety from potential mob violence.
While SAPS maintains these raids are essential for provincial security, they highlight the deepening crisis for the Zimbabwean diaspora.
