Dozens of vehicles up for grabs at Beitbridge auction

THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) will conduct a major customs auction sale at Beitbridge Border Post from June 24 to 26, featuring a wide range of motor vehicles, liquor, electronics, clothing and assorted imported goods.

According to the auction notice released yesterday, the sale will be held online via the ABC Auctions bidding platform and mobile application.

Approximately 35 to 40 vehicles and more than 50 lots of goods will be auctioned.

Among the vehicles listed for auction are Toyota Hilux models, Nissan Hardbody single cabs, Toyota Hiace minibuses, Mitsubishi trucks, Mazda Demios, Hyundai Elantra sedans, Mercedes-Benz vehicles and a Volkswagen Tiguan.

Several accident-damaged vehicles, trailers and scrap vehicles will also go under the hammer.

Zimra and ABC Auctions, in a joint notice, said payment for some items would strictly be required in United States dollars, while others would be payable in Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG).

“Where payment is required for an item in USD, the buyer must settle in USD. Where an item is payable in ZiG, payment shall be made in line with Zimra regulations,” the notice read.

The auction will also include chrome concentrate, PVC pipes, speakers, microwaves, TV wall mounts, exercise books, toiletries, and large quantities of clothing and footwear.

Liquor products, including Hennessy VSOP, Johnnie Walker Black Label, Jägermeister, Gordon’s Gin, Ballantine’s whisky and various wines, are listed among the goods available for bidding.

Zimra said bidders must register through the ABC Auctions mobile application, available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, before participating in the sale.

The authority added that bidders wishing to increase their spending thresholds may do so by paying a surety deposit exceeding 10% of their intended spending amount.

The auctioneers further noted that all lots remain subject to adjustment, withdrawal or addition at Zimra’s discretion.

Meanwhile, ABC Auctions announced forthcoming rummage sales in Harare, Victoria Falls and Beitbridge between July 3 and 31, 2026.

This month's auction comes after another was conducted at Beitbridge Border Post, where dozens of vehicles and a wide range of confiscated goods were sold last month.

The auction featured more than 20 vehicles, including luxury cars, minibuses, trucks and utility vehicles, with some payable in United States dollars while others were acquired in ZiG.

The auctioning of confiscated goods and vehicles comes at a time when concerns have been raised over Zimra conducting inland checkpoints along the Beitbridge-Gwanda Road and the Bulawayo-Plumtree Road, where many goods have been confiscated.

However, Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion deputy minister Kudakwashe Mnangagwa defended Zimra in Parliament.

He was responding to Matabeleland South Senator Nonhlanhla Mlotshwa, who had questioned the legal basis and function of Zimra’s inland checkpoint in Gwanda, which prompts inspections after vehicle clearance at Beitbridge Border Post.

Mnangagwa said the functions of Zimra are enshrined in the Revenue Authority Act [Chapter 23:11], while customs functions are provided for under the Customs and Excise Act.

“Section 15 of the Customs and Excise Act provides for the establishment of customs barriers and reads: ‘(1) The commissioner may establish customs barriers on any road or route for the control of imports and exports,’” he said.

“Inland checkpoints along the major trunk roads leading to and from the border are necessitated by a high incidence of smuggling through porous routes, including borderlines on either side of Beitbridge Border Post.

“This resulted in cross-border transporters picking up smuggled goods inland, as noted from various seizures recorded since the inception of the national project in late 2024.”

He said it should also be noted that these inland checkpoints included security personnel for national security considerations.

“These searches are based on risk management to select which traffic to stop and search. Not all vehicles are stopped and, where they are, searches are conducted with passenger co-operation to avoid unnecessary delays,” Mnangagwa said.
