Nestled in the heart of Mpopoma township, Mpopoma High School has continued to cement its reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s leading educational institutions, producing outstanding academic results while remaining committed to inclusive and transformative education.
Founded in 1959 as Bulawayo African Secondary School, Mpopoma High School holds a special place in the nation’s educational history as the first government secondary school established in Bulawayo’s western suburbs to provide education for African learners.
Following Zimbabwe’s independence, the school expanded its academic offerings by introducing Advanced Level education in 1980, a move that has contributed significantly to its current status as an elite A-Level Science Centre.
Guided by its vision, “To be the catalyst for national economic, scientific and social transformation through inclusive, equitable and heritage-based 21st century education,” the school has remained steadfast in its pursuit of academic excellence and holistic student development.
The institution’s mission is reflected in its motto, “Velamfundo” (Arise Education), which inspires both learners and educators to strive for excellence and lifelong learning.
Today, Mpopoma High School is home to more than 2,300 students from Form One to Form Six. To effectively cater for this growing enrolment, the school operates a double-session system. Supporting the learners is a dedicated team of 94 teachers, including experienced educators who have served the institution for more than 35 years.
The school’s core values of professionalism, teamwork, inclusivity, dedication, honesty, diverse thinking, innovativeness, self-reliance, commitment, integrity and respect continue to shape its culture and success.
Mpopoma’s academic achievements speak for themselves. In the 2025 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) Advanced Level examinations, 63 students attained 15 points or more, a remarkable feat that underscores the school’s commitment to quality education.
