The stage is set for a battle for the crown as the Masvingo-based Charles Austin Theatre hosts the Miss Charles Austin Theatre beauty pageant on May 30, 2026.
Miss Charles Austin is a beauty pageant and cultural showcase organised by Charles Austin Theatre to celebrate talent, confidence and purpose among young women while promoting arts and community engagement in Masvingo.
The pageant gained momentum on May 15 when eight contestants were officially unveiled during the Sash Unveiling Ceremony held ahead of the main event.
Charles Austin Theatre director Mhlauli Mlalazi said the initiative seeks to empower young women beyond beauty standards.
“We are holding Miss Charles Austin to create a platform that goes beyond looks. The goal is to empower young women through personal development, public speaking, leadership and community service. It is also about using theatre and performance to tell African stories and give young talent a stage to shine,” he said.
Mlalazi said contestants stand to benefit from more than just prizes, with the pageant offering exposure and personal growth opportunities.
“For the models, it is not only about prizes, but they will also gain media exposure and personal branding support, training in public speaking, stage presence and etiquette, networking opportunities with professionals, sponsors and creatives, as well as community service experience and opportunities that open doors in modelling, entertainment and advocacy,” he said.
The pageant is expected to blend beauty, theatre and culture, with contestants taking part in public speaking and music segments alongside the traditional runway showcase.

Organisers have also incorporated live music and storytelling into the event to create a full theatrical experience rather than a conventional beauty pageant.
The May 15 sash unveiling ceremony featured live guitar performances, saxophone music and other entertainment acts.
Miss Charles Austin Theatre was founded by the Charles Austin Theatre management committee in 2024 after identifying a gap in platforms that develop young women holistically by combining beauty, talent and character.
Mlalazi said the selection process focused more on substance than physical appearance.
“We had criteria we used to choose the models, including confidence and communication skills, which is how well a contestant expresses herself. We also looked at talent and stage presence, including singing, dancing, acting or public speaking ability,” he said.
“We also considered character and discipline, commitment to training and community values, as well as a purpose-driven mindset and willingness to engage in community projects.
“Height and measurements are not the main focus. We want women who can represent the brand with substance.”
