Woman escapes jail for assaulting husband’s second wife

A 67-YEAR-OLD Umguza woman narrowly avoided prison following her conviction for assaulting her husband’s second wife, whom she had never met before finding her in bed with him.

Yutah Nkomo was convicted of assault when she appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla. She was sentenced to six months in prison, wholly suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence.

The court heard that on March 22 this year, Nkomo went to her husband’s workplace at Mpofu Compound, Master Cecil Mine in Umguza.

On arrival, she found her husband in bed with Debra Ndlovu, his second wife in a polygamous marriage.

A heated argument broke out, during which Nkomo struck Ndlovu once on the back of the head with an unidentified object, causing a deep cut. Ndlovu was taken to hospital for treatment.

Although Nkomo was aware of her husband’s other marriage, the court heard that the two women had not met before the incident.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Nkomo’s arrest. A medical report was tendered in court as evidence.
