A 23-YEAR-OLD man from Zvishavane has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following his conviction for armed robbery by the Zvishavane Regional Magistrates’ Court.
Takaedza Mutasa was found guilty on two counts of armed robbery.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, on March 19 this year, Mutasa and his accomplices raided the Dyke Carbon Tech Elution Plant in Noelvale, Zvishavane, armed with a pistol, machetes, iron bars and other weapons.
“The gang overpowered an employee, tied him with cables and forced him into the main office, where they stole a Samsung S23 Ultra cellphone, US$4 000 and blew open a safe with explosives, which was empty,” the NPAZ said.
A tip-off led the police to Gweru, where a shootout broke out, resulting in one suspect being killed and another injured.
Mutasa initially escaped, but was later captured.
Further investigations linked him to a second robbery in Mberengwa, where he and others targeted a security guard, stealing a cellphone and CCTV server equipment.
Mutasa was sentenced to 10 years for each count of robbery.
