OPPOSITION Mkoba South legislator John Kuka has implored government not to wait for national events to develop infrastructure.
Kuka cited the ongoing infrastructure upgrades in Maphisa, Matabeleland South province, where this year’s Independence Day celebrations will be held.
He expressed fear that once the commemorations are over, there will be no follow-up to maintain the roads.
“Is government policy to ensure that roads leading to celebration sites are rehabilitated?” Kuka quizzed ministers during a Parliamentary session.
“We have observed that once the celebrations are over, these roads become impassable.”
Transport minister Felix Mhona, however, said government was committed to rehabilitating the country’s road network with rehabilitation programmes already underway across the country.
He said even where celebrations were being held, due diligence was taken to ensure that rehabilitated infrastructure benefits those areas in the long term.
“We do not only wait for the day of celebrations,” he said.

“While the celebrations are important, we are committed to rehabilitating the roads for a long term.”
Government said this year’s Uhuru celebrations in Maphisa are expected to bring significant development to the region with infrastructure projects like stadium construction and road rehabilitation underway.
The celebrations to mark the country’s 46th independence anniversary are being held under the theme Zim@46: Unity and Development Towards Vision 2030.
