All set for iMiklomelo KaDakamela festival

Chief Dakamela

Preparations for the iMiklomelo kaDakamela Festival are at an advanced stage, with organisers promising a vibrant programme of music, cultural activities, sport and traditional experiences.

Alongside the main programme, workshops will focus on how residents can monetise waste such as plastic bottles, while the popular Amahubo sessions will also return.

Festival-goers from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Tanzania can look forward to campfire storytelling led by the local chief, traditional bush dinners, a unique camping experience and sporting events, including the trademark Bosso social soccer match and the introduction of cricket, Emakhaya.

Event coordinator Desmond Ntini confirmed that preparations are progressing well.

He said this year’s packed programme includes campfire storytelling, the traditional bush dinner, and a unique camping experience.

“The chief will take centre stage as the guest storyteller,” Ntini said.

Ntini noted that the festival is facing funding challenges after extending the number of days for this year’s event.

“Our main challenge centres on funding,” he said.  “Large numbers of people from the koDakamela community attend, and they also need to be catered for. We are appealing for more support.”

The festival runs from April 3 to 6 at the chief’s homestead in Nkayi district.

Special guests include Gama Mbokane from Tanzania, Prince Wandile Ngobese, and Umntwana waseZibindini uThulani kaGqikazi kaSolomon.

Organisers have also collaborated with the Isintu Festival, which will host a mini music festival within the main event, alongside an empowerment workshop for local artists.
