Byo fire brigade gets UK boost

THE City of Bulawayo is strengthening its fire and emergency services following a visit by a delegation of fire and rescue professionals from the United Kingdom, under Phase 13 of its partnership with Operation Florian.

City legal officer Spekiwa Mugiya highlighted that the partnership has played a pivotal role in supporting the city’s efforts.

“The collaboration continues to deliver measurable impact, strengthening fire and emergency services,” Mahiya said.

She noted that Bulawayo’s Fire Brigade is increasingly recognised as a benchmark for quality service delivery.

Town clerk Christopher Dube said the programme has expanded, with 18 local authorities participating in a two-week intensive training programme.

“The programme has expanded in scope, with the current phase bringing together 18 local authorities, reinforcing the city’s role as a centre of excellence in emergency response,” he said.

Head of delegation for Operation Florian, Tony Burscough, reflected on the partnership that was ignited with equipment donations.

“What began as an equipment donation initiative has grown into a sustainable partnership, with over 20 containers of fire and medical equipment, emergency vehicles, and ongoing skills transfer delivered since 2011,” Burscough said.

Bulawayo mayor David Coltart commended the Fire and Ambulance Section for being professional.

“I commend the Fire and Ambulance Section for its professionalism and expressed hope that the programme will continue to grow, given its clear and positive

results,” he said.
