The Midlands Province has launched its first specialised fistula repair camp aimed at providing life-changing surgical treatment to women suffering from obstetric fistula.

The initiative is designed to restore dignity and health to women who have endured years of physical pain, social stigma and isolation due to the condition.

“The Midlands Province has launched its first specialised fistula repair camp, offering surgery to women who have endured years of stigma and physical discomfort caused by obstetric fistula, a preventable childbirth injury often linked to prolonged labour without timely medical intervention,” said the Midlands Information Desk.

The newly launched camp will bring together specialist surgeons, nurses and other healthcare professionals who will conduct corrective surgeries and provide comprehensive care to affected patients.

“The programme seeks to give affected women a second chance at life by addressing the medical condition while also restoring their dignity and confidence,” the statement read.

“Beyond surgical treatment, the initiative will also raise awareness on maternal health issues and the importance of seeking professional medical care during delivery.”

Obstetric fistula is widely recognised as a preventable childbirth injury that occurs mainly in cases of prolonged or obstructed labour without timely medical intervention.

Global health organisations have long emphasised the need for improved maternal healthcare, access to skilled birth attendants and emergency obstetric services to eliminate the condition and protect women’s reproductive health.
