DETOUR construction is now in progress on the Gwanda-Maphisa Road leading to this year’s Independence Day celebration venue from the Matabeleland South provincial capital.
Maphisa hosts this year’s Independence Day celebrations.
However, key access roads are in a bad state, a situation that has seen contractors engage in 24-hour shifts to meet deadlines.
In a statement, the Transport and Infrastructural Development ministry said the detours on the route were a critical part of ensuring that motorists and communities continue to access the road safely while major works are undertaken.
“Detour construction is currently in progress on the Gwanda-Maphisa Road Construction Project as works advance to ensure smooth traffic flow during the rehabilitation process,” the statement read.
“We are prioritising the safety of road users while delivering durable and modern infrastructure.”
According to the ministry, ongoing infrastructural projects form part of the broader national road rehabilitation programme aimed at improving accessibility, boosting trade and strengthening rural-urban linkages.
“Kilometre by kilometre, we are transforming our road network, improving safety and accessibility,” the ministry said.

“These projects are not only about roads, but about unlocking economic opportunities and ensuring communities are fully integrated into the national development agenda.”
The ministry urged road users to exercise caution and adhere to road signs in construction zones to ensure safety for workers and motorists.
The government says it has intensified efforts to rehabilitate major highways and feeder roads after President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2021 declared the country’s roads a state of national disaster.
