A 32-YEAR-OLD Nkayi woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for brutally assaulting her three-year-old stepdaughter.

Buhlebenkosi Ndlovu appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Sibonginkosi Mnkandla, where she was convicted of attempted murder.

Ndlovu was intially sentenced to seven years in prison, before two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on June 26, 2025 at around 2pm, Ndlovu and the child were at Sazini Ndlovu’s homestead in Nkayi.

Buhlebenkosi, who was enraged by the child’s father’s failure to send money to support the family, repeatedly assaulted the toddler with a rope, poured boiling water over her and burnt her with firewood logs.

The father works as an artisanal miner in Filabusi.

The assault only stopped when neighbours intervened.

The case was reported to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest.

The child was taken to hospital for medical examination and treatment.

The minor is still hospitalised and undergoing treatment for the injuries.

A medical report outlining the extent of the injuries was submitted in court as evidence.
