VILLAGERS in Hwange have expressed satisfaction over ongoing development projects that are easing perennial water challenges and creating economic opportunities in the area.
Ward 16 councillor Eugen Dube told Southern Eye that the community is benefiting from both government support and financial assistance from non-governmental organisations to drive local development.
He said there is drilling of community boreholes with community gardens in the four villages including Lupote, Chabasichana, Mpakati and Kamalala.
Dube highlighted the construction of a community hall at Cross Dete shopping centre, funded by Campfire funds.
“Previously, we relied on school facilities for community activities, which caused damage to classrooms and furniture. With our own hall, we will protect the schools and have a proper venue for gatherings,” he said.
Dube noted that water scarcity remains a challenge due to erratic rainfall and the absence of dams to harness water flowing to the Zambezi River.
“We do not have dams to harness this water that is flowing down to the Zambezi River, hence these boreholes will improve our food security,” he said.
Dube said the gardens will be a source of income for the community through the production of vegetables for sale.
