A 27-year-old Plumtree man has been remanded in custody on seven counts of fraud following his appearance before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware.

Pride Sibanda was remanded to January 28 for a bail application. Prosecutor Sheila Nyathi outlined a series of deceptions allegedly committed by Sibanda between November 2025 and January this year.

The court heard that Sibanda employed a similar scheme in each instance, approaching individuals with offers of work or transport to the Mphoengs area, collecting upfront fees, and then vanishing with the money with no intention of fulfilling the agreements.

On November 6, Sibanda allegedly misrepresented to Charles Lihaka at Makariba location that he intended to hire transport to ferry goods from Mphoengs to Mberengwa, fraudulently obtaining US$325.

On another count, he allegedly deceived Vigilence Maposa with a similar story about delivering mining parcels to Ingwizi, Mphoengs, and obtained US$600.

Sibanda is facing five additional fraud counts with a similar pattern.

His arrest on January 12 at around 3:30pm led to the recovery of a press-button flick knife inscribed with "AK-47" on the blade, adding a separate charge for possession of a dangerous weapon.

The prosecution opposed bail, citing the potential for Sibanda to interfere with witnesses and the seriousness of the charges. Nembaware remanded him in custody pending a formal bail hearing.
