NEW Year celebrations in Pumula South nearly turned tragic after a vehicle caught fire allegedly due to firecrackers, Bulawayo chief fire officer Mhlangano Moyo has confirmed.
“On arrival, it was found alight and brigade crews used one high pressure hose reel to deal with the fire,” he said.
Moyo said the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla valued at US$3 500, was found ablaze at a house in Pumula South.
“Bulawayo Fire Brigade teams responded swiftly and managed to contain the blaze using a high-pressure hose reel.
“While no injuries were reported, the vehicle sustained damage estimated at US$1 500, with US$2 000 worth of property saved.”
Moyo said investigations established that firecrackers were scattered at the scene, raising suspicion they may have triggered the fire.
“The incident highlights the dangers of irresponsible use of firecrackers especially in residential or public areas.”
