Byo Christmas luncheon honours elderly

Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Judith Ncube

THE government has reaffirmed its commitment to honouring and supporting the elderly, recognising their lifelong contributions to community and national development.

Speaking at a luncheon held for the elderly and vulnerable people in the city, Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Judith Ncube emphasised the importance of showing gratitude to senior citizens, while they are still alive.

“The government sees the elderly as important for what they have done, hence we saw the need to say thank you. Let us learn to appreciate the work they do,” Ncube said.

She acknowledged the concerns many elders have regarding the wellbeing of the younger generation.

Ncube said the government remained committed to strengthening family values and protecting vulnerable groups while ensuring the dignity of the elderly.

Alderman Moffat Ndlovu, who was the guest of honour at the event, echoed similar sentiments.

“The elderly played a critical role in developing our communities and our country,” he said.

“As a government, we saw it fit to pause and say thank you.”

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the gifts they received.

“I am grateful for this. The minister is doing a great job,” said Cecilia Sangweni.

Another recipient, Josephine Ndebele from Sizinda, added: “I now have soap to wash and salt to add to my relish.”

The luncheon served as both a festive season gesture and a reaffirmation of the social value placed on the elderly in the community.
