Gweru Urban MP donates to the elderly

Gweru Urban Member of Parliament Josiah Makombe hands over groceries to a beneficiary

CITIZENS Coalition for Change Gweru Urban legislator Josiah Makombe yesterday donated Christmas and New Year groceries to over 100 elderly people and people with disabilities in his constituency.

“The elderly and vulnerable groups like people with disabilities in our communities face difficulties in putting food on the table,” Makombe said.

“It becomes even worse during the festive season when people would be celebrating and enjoying themselves while the elderly and those with disabilities would be struggling to get basic food items. It is in that spirit that we should always remember vulnerable groups in our communities.”

One of the beneficiaries, Rose Sibanda, said she had three grandchildren and was struggling to cater for them.

“I don’t know how to thank this Christmas gift because there was nothing to give these children particularly during the festive period,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Edson Mlambo, who resides in ward 4, said the pension he was getting was not enough to buy basics.

“My pension is meagre so at least with these groceries I received today my family can get some food as well as other items for washing,” he said.

Most people in the country faced a bleak Christmas this year owing to the economic meltdown in the country.
