‘Corrupt municipal cops’ days numbered’

Addressing senior government and council officials from the province in Gweru on Monday, the former State Security minister said rogue behaviour by municipal cops would not be tolerated.

MIDLANDS Provincial Affairs minister Owen Ncube has warned corrupt municipal security personnel who confiscate vendors’ wares saying they will soon face the wrath of the law.

Addressing senior government and council officials from the province in Gweru on Monday, the former State Security minister said rogue behaviour by municipal cops would not be tolerated.

“I have noted with concern that there are rogue and unscrupulous municipal police officers who are demanding and siphoning money from vendors. This will not be tolerated and the full wrath of the law will catch up with offenders,” he said.

Sporadic running battles between municipal police and informal traders are commonplace in urban areas, with the latter always accusing council security personnel of forcibly seizing their wares and demanding bribes.

The Gweru City Council has, for example, however, maintained that targeted vendors are usually those operating at illegal sites or blocking pavements.

Meanwhile, Ncube said local authorities should contribute to the growth of the gross domestic product of their areas by employing practical strategies which promote investment and the ease of doing business.

“As leaders at district level you are the custodians of the devolution and decentralisation agenda. I, therefore, direct you to operationalise the policy which was designed to move our country through inclusive growth and development,” he said.
