‘Elections stalling GBV campaigns’

Self Help Group national co-ordinator Mthokozisi Ndebele said they had implemented similar projects in 13 districts across the country.

WOMEN in Bulilima and Mangwe districts have complained that campaigns for the August 23 polls have stalled their alcohol and gender-based violence (GBV) awareness programme.

In an interview, Milikani Federation president Samaria Nkomo told Southern Eye this week that they are still conducting awareness campaigns, adding that the elections had slowed them down.

“We are still going forward with an awareness campaign in a bid to fight alcohol abuse and GBV in our community. But now that there are elections people are busy, so we have slowed down a bit,” Nkomo said.

“During the drug awareness campaigns, we do engage the police to talk to our youth and teenagers over the effects that these drugs have on them. Last week we were in Plumtree and we were having a GBV awareness campaign with the elderly women and men in the community.”

In May this year, women joined hands to form Self-Help Group to tackle poverty, gender-based violence, teenage pregnancy and alcohol abuse.
