Teachers reject civil service job review, demand salary adjustment

HARARE, May 12 (NewsDay Live) — The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has rejected the government’s public service job evaluation exercise, saying it failed to address worsening salary erosion and worker incapacitation.

Cabinet approved the exercise on April 15 as part of efforts to restructure civil service salaries and align pay with job responsibilities.

But PTUZ said the review ignored key concerns affecting teachers and other public sector workers.

“It is clear that when the Job Evaluation Exercise was carried out, it left out many issues that need to be addressed,” PTUZ Harare provincial chairperson Charles Mubwandarikwa said in a statement.

He said the union would produce a detailed assessment highlighting gaps related to qualifications, experience and responsibilities.

“The outcome of the exercise was neither desirable nor acceptable and has failed to meet expectations,” he said.

Civil servants have repeatedly complained that salaries are failing to keep pace with the rising cost of living.

Mubwandarikwa said frustration over pay cuts across sectors and warned teachers could withdraw their labour if conditions do not improve.

“We urgently need a cost-of-living adjustment to keep our heads above water,” he said. “Our continuous reporting for duty cannot be guaranteed.”

The union said it had begun consultations with health sector unions and other education unions over possible collective action if salary concerns remain unresolved.
