HARARE, May 4 (NewsDay Live) – Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday urged citizens, including civil servants and war veterans, to rally behind what he called the “Fourth Chimurenga” to advance his Vision 2030 economic agenda.
Speaking at the burial of national hero Simon Brian Bere at the National Heroes Acre, Mnangagwa said the new phase of struggle should focus on securing “total control” of Zimbabwe’s resources and driving industrialisation and modernisation.
“Vision 2030 is a stepping stone towards greater prosperity,” he said, framing the programme as an economic campaign built on productivity, innovation and self-reliance rather than armed conflict.
The appeal comes as Zimbabwe grapples with persistent economic headwinds, including currency volatility, high living costs and corruption concerns. The country has also seen recurring labour unrest and an outflow of skilled workers.
Mnangagwa said women remained central to economic activity, particularly in small businesses, and acknowledged the pressures they face from climate change and Western sanctions.
Vision 2030 is the government’s long-standing target to attain upper middle-income status by the end of the decade.
