No monthly household solar tax: Zera

But, in a statement, Zera said the reports were malicious and false.

THE Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) has dismissed reports that it plans to introduce a monthly tax of US$100 on households using solar energy.

According to reports, the proposed tax was supposed to apply to households which installed solar power, with the revenue generated expected to support the development of the country’s energy sector and boost economic growth.

But, in a statement, Zera said the reports were malicious and false.

The regulator said it was guided by the recently launched government National Energy Compact, which aims to ensure universal access to energy by 2030.

Under the policy, the government announced measures to ensure increased rollout of all energy forms including solar.

“To support this goal, the following incentives have been put in place: Duty-free importation of solar equipment, e-training for solar installers to boost the industry and ensure adherence to safety standards, e-net-metering regulations that allow households to supply excess energy to the grid,” Zera said.

“Zera reassures the public that there is no levy or charge required or will be required to install or own a solar system for domestic use.

“Members of the public are, therefore, advised to completely ignore the malicious statements as they are contrary to government policy and priorities.”

Citizens are turning to solar as a back-up plan as the country’s power utility, the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company, is failing to generate enough power to meet national demand.
