POLICE in Goromonzi South, Mashonaland East province, have launched a manhunt for two Zanu PF members who stormed a police base, beat up law enforcement agents on duty before unlawfully releasing their colleague from police custody.

NewsDay is reliably informed that some of the police officers at Gazebo Police Base in Caledonia were injured during the skirmishes on Monday.

It is reported that a youth leader, Freddy Madzinga alias Marhino, was arrested following clashes involving illegal land sales and was detained at the police base.

Zanu PF ward 14 losing candidate, Menard Gazi, and a Zanu PF Bvumazvipere district chairperson, Jimmy Matanda, reportedly stormed the police base to secure the release of their colleague.

Gazi is also Zanu PF Nehanda Nyakasikana district chairperson.

Police have since engaged both the Zanu PF district and provincial leadership seeking help in apprehending the trio.

The matter is currently being investigated under Mabvuku Police Station.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckson Chakanza said he was not aware of the incident.

A top Zanu PF provincial member who declined to be named yesterday confirmed the incident.

“It is true that some party officials raided a police base and attacked some police officers after one of them was detained,” the party official said.

“That is lawlessness and they have to face the full wrath of the law. The party does not tolerate that at all.”
