Nurses across Zimbabwe have announced a three-day protest over poor salaries and deteriorating working conditions

HARARE, Apr. 20 (NewsDay Live) – Nurses across Zimbabwe have announced a three-day protest over poor salaries and deteriorating working conditions, warning they will down tools if government fails to act.

In a statement posted on its social media platforms, the Zimbabwe Nurses Association said demonstrations will run from April 20 to April 22, after an earlier action scheduled for April 15 was postponed.

At Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, some nurses indicated they were preparing to protest within hospital premises, signalling the start of a nationwide job action.

Nurses say repeated engagements with their employer have yielded no meaningful results, leaving them with little option but to escalate.

“We can no longer afford even basic transport to come to work. Our salaries have been eroded to nothing,” one nurse said.

The looming strike threatens to cripple operations in public health institutions already strained by staff shortages, drug supply constraints and outdated equipment.

In previous disputes, health workers have demanded salaries pegged to the United States dollar, arguing that local currency earnings rapidly lose value to inflation.

Government has acknowledged challenges in the health sector, but fiscal constraints have limited its capacity to meet the demands.
