On a chilly winter morning, something extraordinary took place, turning an ordinary weekend into a lively celebration of collaboration and health. Instead of working behind computer screens, employees from across the company came together in a spirited competition for the First Mutual Health Winter Challenge 2026.
What made this event special was its breaking down of traditional boundaries. There were no departmental lines, no job titles, and no office walls. Managers competed alongside graduate trainees, finance challenged sales, HR encouraged operations. Friends became teammates, colleagues became champions. And yes, there was serious competition, with attractive cash prizes up for grabs. Yet, by the end of the day, it became clear that everyone had already won something much bigger rediscovering the joy of being active, the sense of belonging, renewed friendships, and the simple pleasure of doing something healthy together.

The final standings saw Warpack take first place, followed by Health Services, Halo Trust, Securities Exchange Zimbabwe, and Defold Min. But the true victory lay in the atmosphere; smiles everywhere, teams celebrating every point, colleagues encouraging one another through physical and mental challenges, and post-event socializing that extended into shared meals and laughter. This was more than a competition; it was an experience that embodied genuine workplace wellness.
Beyond the Challenge: Rethinking Employee Wellbeing
The Winter Challenge exemplifies a shift in how organizations approach employee health. Traditional wellness programs often focus on delivering information health talks, screenings, brochures activities that tend to be memorable for all the wrong reasons. While important, these initiatives rarely inspire lasting behavior change. Real transformation happens when employees experience wellness first hand, when they build relationships, develop resilience, and have fun doing it.
This event illuminated five key lessons for HR leaders and organizations:
Wellness should be exciting. People are naturally drawn to activities they enjoy.
- Zim’s human rights record examined
- Bulls to charge into Zimbabwe gold stocks
- We are being targeted: CSOs
- Samaita owes success to God

From One Event to Lasting Change
The Winter Challenge’s success sparked a new question: what happens on Monday? To sustain the momentum, First Mutual Health launched the 1stCARE Loyalty Rewards Program. This initiative extends the spirit of the challenge throughout the year, rewarding employees for making healthy choices, completing screenings, participating in wellness campaigns, joining future challenges, and supporting healthier lifestyles daily.
The program aims to shift the focus from rewarding illness to rewarding prevention, fostering a culture where healthy behaviours are recognized and celebrated regularly. For organizations, this means greater engagement, increased participation in wellness initiatives, stronger workplace culture, earlier detection of health risks, and ultimately, better long-term healthcare outcomes.
Envisioning a Healthier Future
Imagine your employees arriving on a Saturday morning, dressed in company colours, laughing, competing, and supporting one another. Picture them returning to work on Monday with renewed energy, stronger relationships, and stories they’ll cherish for weeks. Now, envision that energy continuing all year round through a rewards program that celebrates and reinforces healthy choices.
The Winter Challenge proved that when wellness is enjoyable, participation becomes natural rather than forced. Employees look forward to the next event, eager to stay active and engaged. At First Mutual Health, we believe that healthier organisations are built one healthy habit, one team, and one challenge at a time. When wellness transforms from an obligation into an experience, everyone wins.
